Description
Catfish Corydoras Decker
“Corydoras deckeri” is a trade name rather than a formally described single species. It is commonly used by exporters and fish stores to label small, armored catfish imported from the Río Meta drainage in Colombia. The trade name Catfish Corydoras Decker typically covers up to four distinct species or variants, most notably Corydoras axelrodi (now scientifically classified as Hoplisoma axelrodi), Corydoras loxozonus, C3 / C003, and Corydoras sp. Features a tan-to-gold body base, a dark or black mask across the eyes, horizontal body stripes or a distinct diagonal/slant bar, and a prominent black dorsal fin. Reaches roughly 1.5 to 2.2 inches (males are slightly smaller at ~1.75 inches, females are stockier and reach ~2 inches) with a lifespan of up to 6 years. Peaceful, gregarious shoaling fish that must be kept in groups of at least 4 to 6 (ideally 5 or more) to display natural behavior. Requires fine, smooth sand rather than sharp gravel. Corydoras sift through the bottom with sensitive barbels, which can easily wear down or get infected on rough surfaces. Bottom-feeder / micro-predator; benefits from sinking pellets, micro-granules, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms.
