Description
Crab Blue Leg Hermit
are popular, easy-to-care-for marine invertebrates that serve as excellent members of a saltwater aquarium’s “clean-up crew”. They are highly valued for their ability to consume nuisance algae and detritus. A single crab can live in nano tanks as small as 5 to 10 gallons. A general stocking rule of thumb is roughly one hermit crab per 10 gallons. Provide plenty of live rock and sand. They spend all day crawling over surfaces to scavenge. Blue legs are omnivorous scavengers. In an established aquarium, they usually find plenty of food on their own, but they shouldn’t be left to starve. They aggressively graze on green hair algae, film algae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria (red slime algae). If your tank is very clean or relatively new, supplement their diet with dried seaweed (nori), algae wafers, or sinking pellets. They also appreciate occasional meaty scraps like mysis shrimp. To prevent aggression, you must scatter a variety of empty, unpainted shells (slightly larger than their current ones) throughout the tank.
