Goldfish: Require different water temperatures and grow large enough to stress or swallow small fish. Heavy Food Competitors: Large plecos (like common pleco) can strip the tank of the vital algae and biofilm that Otos need to survive unless supplemental feeding is heavily managed.

Description

Catfish Otocinclus

Otocinclus or “otos,” are tiny, peaceful freshwater armored catfish from South America famous for their voracious algae-eating habits. Covered in rows of armor-like plating with an underslung sucker-mouth used to graze on surfaces. Typically live between 3 to 5 years (and up to 6+ years with optimal care). They are highly social, schooling fish that feel safer and more active when kept in groups of 5 to 6 or more. Peaceful and safe for community tanks containing small, non-aggressive fish and shrimp. They feed primarily on soft green algae and micro-organisms/biofilm found on glass, decorations, and live plants. Because they can quickly exhaust available tank algae, supplement their diet with algae wafers, spirulina, and blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or cucumber.
