CompatibilityGood tank mates for a Striped Raphael Catfish (Platydoras armatulus) are peaceful, medium-sized fish that cannot fit into its mouth and share similar water requirements such as: Tetras & Rasboras: Larger tetras such as Congo Tetras, Black Skirt Tetras, or Rummynose Tetras, as well as Scissortail Rasboras and Harlequin Rasboras. Bottom Dwellers & Plecos: Bristlenose Plecos, Iquitos Tiger Plecos, and peaceful Corydoras catfish. Red tail loaches or saddle-back loaches (though they may briefly squabble over caves). Gouramis & Angels: Peaceful cichlids and gouramis like Angelfish, Honey Gouramis, or Opaline Gouramis. Other Community Fish: Rainbowfish and Giant Danios.
Avoid Housing With Avoid tiny fish or dwarf shrimp. Striped Raphael catfish are generally peaceful scavengers, but they will eat any tank mate small enough to fit into their mouths. Watch other Raphael catfish: Keeping multiple Raphael catfish together can lead to bickering over prime caves and hiding spots unless you provide plenty of individual territories.

Description

Catfish Rapheal Striped

Catfish rapheal striped is a highly popular, exceptionally hardy freshwater fish native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in South America. Belonging to the Doradidae family of armored catfish, they are widely known as “talking catfish” because they produce a low-frequency croaking or grunting sound by rubbing their pectoral spines together or vibrating their swim bladders when stressed or removed from the water. Grows to 6 to 9 inches (15–23 cm), with some specimens reaching up to 10 inches or more.  Lives up to 10 to 15+ years with proper care. Minimum of 55 gallons (or a 40-gallon breeder for smaller/juvenile setups, with a footprint of at least 48″ x 12″ x 12″).

They are nocturnal, bottom-dwelling fish that stress easily if exposed. They hide 90% of the day in caves, PVC pipes, or under driftwood, and emerge mostly after lights-out to feed on sinking protein-rich foods.  Provide sand or smooth gravel and plenty of driftwood, rocks, or PVC caves to hide in during the day. Omnivorous. They happily accept sinking catfish pellets, bottom-feeder wafers, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and meaty frozen foods. They have a massive appetite and will eat until their bellies look dangerously full; moderate their portions to prevent obesity or spinal health issues. Generally peaceful with other community fish, though they are predatory toward tiny fish or shrimp that can fit inside their mouth. They feature sharp, serrated pectoral spines that can lock outward or “pinch” when stressed; handle with care and avoid using standard net mesh where their spines can snag.
