Description
Snail Conch Strawberry
Conomurex luhuanus is a peaceful, hard-working marine snail. Renowned as an exceptional addition to a saltwater reef aquarium cleanup crew, this species gets its flavor-themed common name from its vibrant reddish-pink interior shell lip and bright red muscular foot. They feature a thick, cone-like exterior shell mottled with tan and white patterns. The outer shell looks similar to a venomous cone snail, but they are entirely harmless herbivores. Unlike most standard snails, they have remarkably advanced, independent, and curious eyes sitting on long stalks that will watch you from under the edge of their shell. Instead of smoothly gliding, they move using a unique “pole-vaulting” or leaping motion, using a hardened, sickle-shaped operculum (trapdoor) to push themselves forward across the sand.
They spend their entire lives plowing through the substrate. This constantly aerates the sandbed, keeping it bright while preventing toxic gas pockets from forming. As dedicated detritivores and herbivores, they clean the tank by eating film algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and leftover organic debris. In exceptionally clean or young systems, you should supplement their diet with sinking algae wafers.
