Reef Minor Elements

UPDATED: September 5, 2026

Reef Saltwater Minor Elements, I consider there to be 6 minor elements and group these 6 elements at this level. Each of these is crucial for processes and utilization of other elements, if you notice there is a shift to a mix of more biological, than skeletal support.

Discuss Ionic balance – target amounts and ratios are dependent on many factors. Environmental, husbandry, level of stock and what is stocked all factor in and influence where it will balance out. not so much a target amount as it is about keeping a ratio of all available as each is needed to be able to consume the other. If one is off, the desired effects can not happen.

  • Barium is crucial for the biological processes of corals, used by other reef organisms and is below 1ppm.
  • Iodine is crucial for the biological processes of corals, used by other reef organisms and is below 1ppm.
  • Lithium is crucial in skeletal and tissue growth connection and development, used by all other reef organisms and is below 1ppm.
  • Molybdenum is crucial in biological and metabolic process, used by all reef organisms and is below 1ppm.
  • Rubidium is crucial in skeletal, biological and for tissue coloration, development, growth, repair and is below 1ppm.
  • Vanadium is crucial in the biological and metabolic process in corals, used by all reef organisms and is below 1ppm

Each is discussed in detail in the following menu options and pages.

Discuss element dependencies and relationships to each other, when adding one need to add a complimentary element to work correctly.
